Looking to the Future

Dr. Beverly Miller (center) shares her experiences as an optometrist practicing in Maryland during the MOA Winter Welcome for optometry students interested in working in Maryland upon graduation.

The MOA Winter Welcome held on December 28 at Dr. Bev Miller’s house was a great success. The Winter Welcome is a networking social in which MOA-member optometrists answer questions and provide career guidance based upon their years of experience for OD students planning on practicing in Maryland upon graduation.

The event included 13 students from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, New England College of Optometry, and University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and MOA members Dr. Steve Pinson, Dr. Lori Sportelli, Dr. Brian Woolfe, Dr. Rob Stutman, Dr. John Burns, and Dr. Norman Fine as well as Miller, the events host. Primary topics of discussion were scope of practice and the future of the profession.

“This was a special evening,” said Miller. “It was a culturally diverse group of students and given that there was a 30-year age gap between some of the ODs and students it was a pleasant surprise to find that we had so much to talk about and so much in common.”
